A major fire at an egg-laying farm in the Waikato has killed 75,000 birds on Monday morning.
Zeagold Nutrition chief executive John McKay confirmed a supervisor on-site called the fire department at 7:40am on Monday.
McKay said all 12 staff members on site are safe and unharmed.
“While the fire is still not contained, it has affected four of the 12 barn layer sheds. Ten emergency vehicles are currently on site to contain the spread of the fire,” McKay said.
McKay said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined and the focus is on the welfare of the hens.
“We are devastated to have lost 75,000 birds from the four sheds that caught fire. The total impact will not be known until the fire is contained,” McKay said.
Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand have been approached for comment.
