11yo boy who died in Gisborne beach incident named as fundraiser launched to support family

"We have lost someone incredibly special, far too soon."

A Givealittle fundraiser has been set up for the family of 11-year-old Oliver Shone who died after an incident at Waikanae Beach in Gisborne.

The young Wellington boy, who died on January 25, has been described as “incredibly special” and “full of life” in a Givealittle fundraiser

“We have lost someone incredibly special, far too soon,” said Bridget Flynn, a friend of Oliver’s mother and creator of the Givealittle fundraiser.

“He was a favourite of many and entertained with his insightful conversations and unique perspective on life. He was a beautiful boy whose departure leaves so many of us with a hole in our lives.”

Flynn said the money raised will go toward Shone’s funeral and “will allow Oliver’s family to grieve without the added financial pressure this will bring”.

So far $5530 had been raised at the time this story was published.

Flynn said Oliver’s mother and family are “generous, selfless and caring”, adding the tragedy is “absolutely heartbreaking for them”.

“This financial contribution is one way for us to show we care and are here to support Oliver’s mother and family through this difficult time.”
