A miracle newborn baby has been found buried beneath the rubble of a five-story apartment building after the devastating earthquake in Turkey.

The baby girl was found with her umbilical cord still connected to her mother, who was dead. Her mother is believed to have died after giving birth.

Rescuers located the baby over 10 hours after the catastrophic earthquake struck Turkey on Monday (local time). A neighbour cut the umbilical cord and the baby was rushed to the hospital. The baby has bruises, lacerations and hypothermia but remains stable.

She was believed to be born three hours before she was found.

Relative Ramadan Sleiman told the Associated Press the baby was the only member of her family to survive the building collapse in the town of Jinderis near Turkey’s border.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southeast Turkey, near Syria’s border, at around 4am Monday (local time) followed by a  large aftershock of a similar magnitude.

The quakes have killed more than 5100 people and left a trail of destruction across a wide area of southern Turkey and neighbouring Syria.

The World Health Organisation warned that the number of fatalities could exceed 20,000 as rescuers continue to pull people from the rubble.
