There has been a massive online reaction to Monday’s bombshell announcement by Stuart Hogg that he will retire from playing at the end of the upcoming Rugby World Cup with Scotland. It’s clear from what was generally published that the 30-year-old is a very much loved full-back who will be hugely missed when he hangs up the boots.
Unless Scotland reach the quarter-finals, the last match that Hogg is currently scheduled to play in his stellar career will be on October 7 when the Scots take on Ireland in their final pool game in Paris.
However, Scotland won’t want their campaign to end there and the full-back’s retirement announcement is now sure to fuel the emotions leading into that Stade de France showdown against a rival that beat them at BT Murrayfield earlier this month in the Guinness Six Nations in Hogg’s most recent Test appearance as he missed the subsequent round five game versus Italy through injury.
The Exeter-based Hogg explained that his club and country retirement decision was based on his feeling that his body can’t much longer achieve the standards he sets himself and it was always his intention to finish at the top of the game, hence his revelation to exit after RWC 2023.
