A man has been sentenced to life in prison after pushing his wife to her death off a cliff edge at an Edinburgh beauty spot.
Kashif Anwar (29), killed Fawziyah Javed (31) at Arthur’s Seat during a holiday in September 2021.
According to BBC, Anwar claimed he had slipped and bumped into his wife, causing her to fall.
The jury at Edinburgh High Court rejected that defence and found him guilty of murdering Javed and causing the death of her unborn child.
Judge Lord Beckett told him that he was guilty of a “wicked crime,” and that his wife had been entitled to his protection.
“You showed no remorse and made no attempt to save her,” he said.
According to BBC, during the week-long trial, the jury heard Javed’s mother say she believed her daughter was in a violent, coercive marriage.
Yasmin Javed said her daughter told her she planned to leave Anwar after a four-night mini-break to Edinburgh.
As she lay dying at the foot of Arthur’s Seat, she told Police that Anwar had pushed her as she had tried to end their relationship the BBC reported.
“We were below the summit. I lost my balance and fell into her,” Anwar told Police.
“I heard her go over the edge and say ‘Oh my foot’ and she started screaming. I heard a thud.”
Javed had a visible head injury when she was found, however, she was able to speak for a short time.
Anwar was arrested for her murder later that night.
