The man accused of stabbing a dairy owner in the Auckland suburb of New Windsor has died.
During a scheduled court hearing on Wednesday morning, Mitchell Lam’s lawyer told the judge his client had passed away while in police custody.
He had faced charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. A court case will hear an application to formally withdraw the charges next month. Name suppression for the accused automatically lapsed.
The dairy owner was taken to hospital after being stabbed earlier this month but other people in the shop intervened to detain the alleged attacker.
More to come.
