A serious accident involving a pedestrian has closed a main road in a rural Waikato town, police say.
Emergency services responded to the accident on Alexandra St in Te Awamutu around 10.45am today.
“Alexandra Street in Te Awamutu is closed while emergency services respond to a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian,” a police spokesperson said.
The Waipā District Council said Alexandra St from the Arawata/Sloane St roundabout to Bank St and Market Str from Alexandra St to Mahoe St, as well as a section of Roche St will be closed for several hours following the accident.
“The street is expected to be closed for some time, please avoid the area while the incident is resolved,” a police spokesperson said.
A passer-by told a Te Awamutu Courier reporter at the scene that a person was hit.
A large truck is parked near the scene.
Firefighters could be seen holding a tarpaulin up around other emergency services working at the scene.
Police, Fire and Emergency and St John are at the scene.
More to come.
