Rising star Marko Stamenic has joined New Zealand football royalty, becoming just the second Kiwi to score in the Champions League.
Making his sixth appearance in Europe’s top club competition, the All Whites midfielder managed to get on the scoresheet, after finding the back of the net for Serbian side Red Star Belgrade.
Trailing 2-0 against hosts Red Bull Leipzig, Stamenic gave his side a glimmer of hope in the 70th minute, when he tapped home a deflected shot from close range, but Dani Olmo’s strike with six minutes of regular time remaining secured a 3-1 victory for the German side.
Stamenic’s first Champions League goal sees him join NZ football great Wynton Rufer as the only other Kiwi to have scored in Europe’s premier club competition.
Red Star Belgrade slip to the bottom of Group G, Leipzig remain in second, while defending champions Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Swiss side BSC Young Boys, ensures they remain top of the group.
