Police now believe the woman who went missing in a yellow kayak off Kāpiti Coast at the weekend was in a one-seater, not two-seater as previously thought.
Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Middlemiss said the woman, believed to be 29-year-old Michaela Leger from Ōtaki, still hasn’t been found.
“A team of investigators is continuing to follow any lead that may lead us to Michaela,” he said.
A woman matching Leger’s description was spotted paddling out to sea in the yellow kayak on Saturday by a member of the public.
Neither Leger nor the kayak has been seen since, despite several agencies searching via air, land, and sea.
Police ask the public to come forward if they’ve noticed a yellow single-seater kayak around Kāpiti Coast beaches since Saturday – abandoned, or otherwise.
“We are concerned for her and are providing support to her whānau,” said Det Snr Sgt Middlemiss.
He thanked LandSAR, Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving, the Department of Conservation, and the Air Force for their help in finding Leger.
The public can share information about this case with police by calling 105, or going online here, and quoting file number 231022/0452.
